Obstetrician Q & A
Do you need to have separate providers for gynecology and obstetrics?
In most cases, the answer is no. Dr. Lang offers both gynecology and obstetrics services to his patients at Progressive Obstetrics & Gynecology. Most patients find it not only convenient but also very comforting to have the same doctor throughout all phases of their reproductive lives. In highly unusual situations when a very specific type of obstetrics or gynecology specialist is needed (like a pregnancy of very high risk), Dr. Lang can refer patients to a trusted specialist, who he will work with to provide excellent care to the patient throughout her pregnancy.
When during pregnancy should obstetrics appointments be planned?
As soon as you suspect you're pregnant, schedule a visit with Dr. Lang, so the pregnancy can be confirmed. Once pregnancy is confirmed, you'll generally see Dr. Lang once a month until the 28th week of pregnancy. From weeks 28-36, the visits typically occur twice a month. Once you reach 36 weeks, you'll see Dr. Lang every week until the day of delivery. For women who are in a high-risk group, the appointments are usually scheduled more frequently. If you're in a high-risk group, you may also need to have ultrasounds more frequently. Those ultrasound appointments may be scheduled separately from check-ups with Dr. Lang.
How should you eat and exercise during pregnancy?
Your diet during pregnancy should emphasize nutritionally dense foods such as whole grains, legumes, dairy products, and eggs. Avoid empty calories like candy bars or ice cream, except as occasional treats. Exercise during pregnancy is encouraged, but please avoid strenuous exercise. Walking, swimming, and other low-impact types of exercise are perfect for pregnant women.
When should a cesarean section be scheduled?
This depends entirely on the specific patient and her situation. A healthy vaginal birth is possible in most pregnancies, but not all. Dr. Lang will closely monitor you and your baby throughout your pregnancy to determine whether a vaginal birth is possible. If a vaginal birth will put you or your baby at risk in any way, Dr. Lang may recommend a scheduled c-section. The ultimate goal is to make sure that both you and your new arrival enjoy the best possible health and wellness, and Dr. Lang will do everything possible to achieve that goal.
